Bike Milwaukie was started by Greg Bartz-Bowman and Matt Menely in the summer of 2011. Greg asked Matt what he thought about the idea of having an event like the Portland Sunday Parkways after hearing Matt talk about how fun they had been for him and his family. The two quickly realized that it was probably not financially viable to hold such a large scale event in a town the size of Milwaukie (approx. 22,000 residents), so they agreed instead to go for a monthly ride and invite their neighbors using email and social media.

The mission of Bike Milwaukie is to encourage residents to explore their town on bicycles with friends and neighbors, and to engage those residents to advocate for safer cycling and pedestrian infrastructure in Milwaukie.
